Flagstaff was built along the railroad lines that carried huge timbers logged here to industrial centers that were growing in the west and in the east in the late 1800s. Rail lines ran into the Ponderosa pine forests from the lumber mills in Flagstaff. Many of the hiking and biking trails for which Flagstaff, AZ is so famous follow or intersect these old railroad beds.

The restored train depot built in 1926 still greets passengers. Even if you are not arriving by Amtrak, the depot is a must-see for all Flagstaff visitors. The arts-and-crafts style building is home to the Flagstaff Visitor Center where you will find free Flagstaff Arizona maps, Grand Canyon travel info, self-guided tours, friendly travel advice and information about local attractions. (Check out vintage Santa Fe Railway posters displayed in the hall between the visitor information and the Amtrak waiting area.)
